ENTREPRENEURSHIP & FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAM
Funded by the Orange County Citizens’ Commission for Children
The Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy Program prepares middle school students, high school students, and young adults up to age 21 to make informed decisions about money, education, employment, entrepreneurship, and their future. The program combines financial education, career exploration, workplace readiness, character development, business instruction, mentorship, and real-world learning experiences.
The program is based on the understanding that young people need more than general information about careers and money. They need practical opportunities to apply what they learn, evaluate their options, make decisions, solve problems, communicate their ideas, and develop realistic financial and career goals.
PROGRAM PURPOSE
Many young people enter adulthood with limited knowledge of budgeting, banking, credit, taxes, investing, employment, and business ownership. They may also have limited exposure to entrepreneurs, employers, professional environments, and community resources that could help them make informed decisions.
Other participants may be uncertain about their educational or career direction, lack confidence in their abilities, or need additional development in communication, leadership, teamwork, dependability, and personal responsibility.
The Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy Program addresses these needs by giving participants practical knowledge and guided experiences before they must make major financial, educational, or employment decisions independently. The program helps young people understand the connection between the choices they make today and the opportunities available to them in the future.
PROGRAM CONCEPT
The program gives equal value to employment and entrepreneurship. Participants are not taught that business ownership is the only path to success, nor are they prepared only to become employees. Instead, they explore multiple ways to use their interests, abilities, education, and skills to create a productive and financially responsible future.
The program’s central concept is learning through real-world projects and practical application. Participants do more than listen to presentations or memorize financial terms. They practice budgeting, evaluate career options, develop business ideas, conduct basic market research, prepare résumés, participate in workplace-readiness activities, and present projects or business pitches.
These activities allow participants to develop confidence through preparation and experience. They learn that confidence is not simply a personality trait. It can be strengthened by gaining knowledge, practicing skills, receiving constructive feedback, and successfully completing challenging tasks.
FINANCIAL LITERACY EDUCATION
Financial literacy instruction helps participants understand how money decisions affect their immediate needs, future goals, and overall independence. Topics include budgeting, saving, banking, financial services, credit, responsible borrowing, income, taxes, paychecks, investing, wealth building, consumer awareness, and fraud prevention.
Budgeting instruction helps participants understand how to organize income and expenses, distinguish between needs and wants, plan for financial obligations, and set savings goals. Banking education introduces participants to financial accounts and services while helping them understand how to evaluate financial products.
Credit instruction explains responsible borrowing, repayment obligations, interest, and the possible long-term effects of credit decisions. Lessons involving income, taxes, and paychecks help participants better understand earnings and common deductions.
Investing and wealth-building education introduces participants to long-term financial planning and the relationship between saving, investing, time, and financial goals. Consumer-awareness instruction helps participants recognize misleading offers, financial scams, identity theft risks, and other forms of fraud.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION
Entrepreneurship instruction begins with identifying problems, needs, and opportunities. Participants learn that a useful business idea generally begins with understanding a problem and identifying people who may be willing to pay for an effective solution.
Participants explore business models, planning, customer needs, market research, marketing, sales, pricing, expenses, revenue, and profit. They learn how these elements work together and how to determine whether a business idea is realistic.
Through business projects, participants may create an idea or basic plan, identify a potential customer, examine competing solutions, consider operating costs, establish a price, and develop a strategy for reaching customers.
Business presentations and pitch activities help participants organize their thinking, communicate clearly, answer questions, and explain the value of an idea. The goal is not only to produce a business concept but also to develop problem-solving, decision-making, planning, and communication skills that can be used in employment, education, and daily life.
CAREER EXPLORATION AND WORKPLACE READINESS
Career exploration helps participants examine their interests, abilities, values, and goals. Career assessments and exposure to different professions allow them to consider employment, education, training, and entrepreneurship options.
Workplace-readiness instruction includes communication, teamwork, professional behavior, dependability, leadership, initiative, problem-solving, decision-making, résumé preparation, interview preparation, goal-setting, and personal responsibility.
Participants learn that workplace success involves more than technical ability. Employers also value individuals who communicate effectively, arrive prepared, complete assignments, work respectfully with others, accept feedback, solve problems, and demonstrate reliability.
Résumé and interview preparation activities help participants explain their skills and experiences in a professional manner. Practice interviews and related exercises give them opportunities to respond to questions, present themselves confidently, and receive feedback before entering actual employment situations.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND PERSONAL GROWTH
Character development is incorporated throughout the program. Participants are encouraged to demonstrate responsibility, persistence, honesty, initiative, dependability, respectful communication, and accountability for their decisions.
Leadership activities help participants understand that leadership includes preparation, service, cooperation, decision-making, and responsibility. Goal-setting exercises help them identify desired outcomes, establish practical steps, monitor progress, and adjust their plans when necessary.
PROGRAM DELIVERY
The program may be delivered through after-school sessions, weekend programming, summer programming, community-based locations, and virtual sessions. This flexible structure allows youth to participate through different learning environments and schedules.
Participants engage in individual and group activities, career assessments, financial exercises, business-development projects, presentations, workplace simulations, and meetings with entrepreneurs or other professionals.
Professional exposure and mentorship help participants connect classroom concepts with real experiences. Entrepreneurs and professionals can provide information about career pathways, workplace expectations, business challenges, educational requirements, and lessons learned through experience.
