Funded by the Orange County Citizens’ Commission for Children
The Physical Health Program is designed to help elementary, middle, and high school students develop the knowledge, practical skills, confidence, and support needed to make healthier choices throughout their lives. The program uses an engaging, evidence-based approach that recognizes that physical health is connected to nutrition, emotional wellness, family support, personal decision-making, and access to reliable community resources.
PROGRAM PURPOSE
Young people may experience several challenges that affect their overall health and well-being. These challenges can include poor nutrition, stress, emotional difficulties, limited access to wellness education, and a lack of awareness about available health and community resources. When these needs are not addressed early, they can make it more difficult for young people to establish healthy routines, manage everyday pressures, make informed decisions, and maintain a positive sense of personal well-being.
The Physical Health Program responds to these needs through education, prevention, early intervention, and family-supported behavior change. Its purpose is not simply to tell young people that they should make healthier choices. The program helps participants understand why healthy choices matter, recognize the connection between their daily habits and overall wellness, and learn practical ways to apply that knowledge in their everyday lives.
THE WHOLE-PERSON WELLNESS CONCEPT
The central concept of the program is that physical health cannot be separated from mental and emotional wellness. A young person’s food choices, stress level, confidence, family environment, access to resources, and ability to set personal goals can all influence overall health.
For this reason, the program uses a whole-person wellness model. Participants receive education and support related to nutrition, healthy food preparation, mental wellness, stress management, personal responsibility, confidence, self-discipline, and individual wellness planning.
The program also emphasizes prevention and early intervention. Young people do not have to wait until a serious health or emotional problem develops before receiving useful information and support. By introducing healthy practices early, the program helps participants build a stronger foundation for making informed decisions as they move through childhood, adolescence, and into adulthood.
PROGRAM DELIVERY
The Physical Health Program serves students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Services are tailored to the developmental needs, maturity, and learning abilities of the participating youth.
Programming may be delivered through after-school sessions, summer programming, and individual or small-group support. These different formats allow participants to receive information and guidance in settings that encourage interaction, discussion, skill development, and personal attention.
Small-group and individual support can also help participants examine their personal habits, identify areas they would like to improve, and establish wellness goals that are realistic for their circumstances. The program’s approach recognizes that every participant may not have the same needs, resources, family environment, or starting point.
WHAT PARTICIPANTS LEARN AND EXPERIENCE
Participants are introduced to health information and practical activities that help them understand how everyday choices can affect their well-being. Program content includes nutrition education, healthy meal and snack preparation, personal wellness planning, mental wellness lessons, stress-management strategies, family wellness activities, community outings, and exposure to available community resources.
Nutrition education helps participants better understand healthy food choices and the role nutrition plays in energy, development, concentration, and overall wellness. Healthy meal and snack preparation gives young people opportunities to connect nutrition information with practical decisions they can use at home.
Mental wellness lessons help participants recognize stress and understand how emotional challenges can affect their behavior, relationships, decision-making, and physical well-being. Participants learn appropriate ways to manage stress, communicate their needs, and respond to challenges.
Personal wellness planning allows each participant to consider their individual needs and establish realistic health-related goals. The emphasis is on progress, consistency, informed decision-making, and the development of habits that can be continued beyond the program.
FAMILY PARTICIPATION AND SUPPORT
Families play an important role in helping young people develop and maintain healthy behaviors. The program includes parents and caregivers through education sessions, family wellness activities, progress updates, goal-setting support, and referrals to community resources.
Parent education gives families information they can use to reinforce program lessons at home. Family wellness activities create opportunities for parents, caregivers, and youth to practice healthy behaviors together. Progress updates help families understand what participants are learning and how they can provide encouragement and support.
When families need additional assistance, the program can connect them with appropriate community resources. This family-centered approach helps extend the program’s impact beyond scheduled sessions and supports a more consistent environment for healthy behavior change.
INTENDED PROGRAM OUTCOMES

The program also seeks to increase participants’ awareness of community health and wellness resources while helping families become more active partners in supporting healthy development.
